Where Do I Start? I am not Handy. Kitchen Remodeling 101

DSC_4138I’m sure we can all relate to the 4 words above as we start the thought process of any remodel. It takes all the energy in our body to finally admit we are ready to think about making that change in our kitchen. With all that is available and all the shows on TV making it look easy, it’s no wonder we get a headache at the first thought of the tools buzzing.

You are already in good shape admitting that you need and want the change. There are two ways that you can get started. You can head over to your nearest big box store and browse around until you see something or someone that sparks your interest. You will see many products out there to choose from but keep in mind that there will be limited knowledge when it comes to the idea department. These stores are a great source when you can put on a tool belt and get started the same day. This is where the do-it yourself-er goes. When you are a client who cannot or will not work with tools on their own, this is when you interview a few kitchen professionals to see who you would like to deal with. Never have them do any designs or prices at first. This is the time to just get to know and understand their ethics and the knowledge that they possess. You will come across many so called designers and this simple process will weed out the fakes. If they start out talking product right away, thank them for their help and walk away.

Good professionals will listen to you first and then they will ask good questions. Their main agenda is to understand where your head is and get to know and understand you better so that they can help you capture the kitchen and design that you desire. Product will be a secondary thing to them knowing that once they understand you better, they can suggest the right products for you in look and in quality. Good questions help the “Dream Process” come together so that in the end, you are a happy client for many years to come. There is no worse feeling than to not like your kitchen after a year or two and to feel guilty or mad about your decision. Our motto has always been, “Good design never has to cost any more than bad design.”

Take the time in the beginning to wade through a few designers so that you make the right decision. Picking and working with the right professional will make the process that much more pleasurable and quicker in the end. How will you know, you ask? You will know, trust your instinct. Dream First!
